This painting is of a Pincushion I came across on a walk that belongs to the Leucospermum genus of the Fynbos family. The whole bush was on fire with clusters of cadmium red flowers. Delicate brushstrokes of fine lines depict the pin like florets on the flowerheads of cool crimson and warm cadmium reds. Leathery leaves are depicted with loose broad brushstrokes that end in horny teeth bearing the flowerheads. The bulk of the pincushion consumes the canvas like a fire eluding to its role in the cycle of Fynbos ecology.
