The title is a play on words. Vel, meaning Skin and the adding the “e” in parentheses turns it into Many. It should then become Skin colour. Carved into the piece are the words: Ek is van Vel(e) kleur, meaning I am of many colours. Essentially the work revolves around the thought that the human race has evolved past segregation. We have become a much more integrated society. This is definitely a sign the we’ve become more accepting of each other even though there are powers that be that are still trying to separate us based on our skin colour, gender, religion and heritage. Try to see each other as individuals and not as a generalised group. It’s what’s inside that counts. Each piece consists of multi-layered and multi-textured elements, using bespoke custom-crafted tools created for each artwork. Each piece started as a series of hand printed blocks carved from Linoleum, then stitched together.
