Established in 2022, Stilbaai Galery has become a respected commercial art gallery. Representing over 40 artists ranging from emerging to mid-career and established, the gallery presents a carefully curated programme of painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and mixed media. Every group exhibition is curated by co-founders and artists Nadine Hansen and Ingrid Smit, reflecting a commitment to artistic excellence, thoughtful curation and exceptional craftsmanship. In 2024, the gallery expanded its offering to include a bespoke picture framing service.
Defined by a quiet yet distinctive aesthetic, Stilbaai Galery is known for works that embrace subtle colour, refined composition and enduring quality. The collection celebrates the richness of contemporary South African art while echoing the tranquillity and natural beauty of its coastal setting. Our Story
Although Nadine and Ingrid had known of one another for years, it wasn’t until a coffee meeting at the end of November 2022 that their paths truly converged. What started as a conversation between two artists and storytellers quickly revealed a shared vision, a mutual love for thoughtful, meaningful art, and an unmistakable creative connection. Just two weeks later, the lease was signed and Stilbaai Galery became a reality at 50 Osler street. As fellow INFJs, they share a deep appreciation for beauty, authenticity,  and the stories that shape us. Today, that same spirit continues to define the gallery—a welcoming space where artists are celebrated, and every exhibition is curated with heart.
Current Exhibition
A Winter T(s)ale is both a tale and a sale—a seasonal exhibition of works on paper, canvas and board drawn from studio shelves, archives, and forgotten portfolios. Inspired by our storeroom, it celebrates rediscovery through studies, sketches, prints, and original works. Often, as shows come down and new works go up on the walls, we place artworks in storage until space opens again. Rediscovering pieces from past shows has such a charm to it.
The exhibition embraces the quiet colours of winter—greys, earthy browns, deep greens, charcoal blacks, and the simplicity of white—echoing the stillness and beauty of the natural world.
Stilbaai Ramery
Our bespoke picture framing service, with every frame handcrafted in our workshop using locally sourced mouldings. Made to gallery-quality standards, our frames are built to last while supporting local craftsmanship, suppliers and sustainable practices.
We now also offer a collection of standard-sized window and floating frames, available off the shelf and online for clients who need a ready-made solution. Handmade in our workshop—not imported—these frames offer the same exceptional quality as our custom work. Nestled along South Africa’s renowned Garden Route, Stilbaai is a charming coastal town where the Goukou River meets the Indian Ocean. Known for its unspoilt beaches, abundant wildlife and relaxed pace of life, Stilbaai offers a rare sense of tranquillity.
The town is home to the ancient Khoi stone fish traps—one of the oldest surviving intertidal fishing systems in the world—and the beloved daily feeding of wild eels at the Palinggat, a rare natural phenomenon.
