Where light takes hold

What we see when we look up depends on where we stand, what surrounds us, and what we are open to discovering.
My work begins with cyanotypes made using real fynbos, allowing light to trace the delicate structures and intricate patterns of the plants. Layers of encaustic wax build depth and translucency, drawing the viewer into the surface of the work. I carve additional botanical lines and butterflies into the wax, introducing colour with oil sticks.

LOOKING UP is both a gesture and a metaphor, an invitation to pause, lift our gaze, and imagine possibilities beyond the uncertainties and difficulties of the present. It speaks to resilience, the search for meaning, and the quiet human longing for hope and transcendence.
Through these layered processes, I explore the relationship between nature, light, fragility, and renewal. The works invite us to look beyond what is immediately visible, to find beauty in the details, and to remain open to the possibility of something more, even in uncertain times.
